About Northern Lights Wildlife Area

Northern Lights Wildlife Area spans over 16,000 acres in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, near the western shore of Lake Superior. This protected area provides a mosaic of ecosystems including mixed hardwood and coniferous forests, wetlands, grasslands, and numerous small lakes and ponds. These habitats support abundant wildlife species such as white-tailed deer, black bear, wild turkey, waterfowl, and a variety of migratory birds, making it a prime location for wildlife enthusiasts and hunters. Established by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to conserve habitat and promote outdoor recreation, the area balances resource protection with public access. Visitors enjoy activities like hiking on a network of maintained trails, fishing in well-stocked lakes and streams, snowmobiling in winter, and birdwatching year-round. The varied terrain appeals to mountain bikers and offers scenic views of the forest canopy and wetlands. While there are no major developed campgrounds within the Wildlife Area, dispersed camping and day-use areas are available, appealing to those looking for a more rustic nature experience. In addition to its wildlife value, the area preserves important cultural history with evidence of early Native American use and ties to Michigan’s logging era. With its remote location and rich biodiversity, Northern Lights Wildlife Area attracts outdoor lovers seeking wildlife encounters and quiet natural settings.
